CHAPTER 2. A GROWING CROSSROADS CITY, 1830-1880
SECTION 3. LIFE IN THE Mid-1800s
GETTING AROUND TOWN
In the early 1800s, most people moved throughout the town by walking or riding a horse. With only dirt roads, streets were muddy in the wet weather. Some city residents who lived in apartments had no space to board a horse, leaving walking as the only option.
Canals, roads, and railroads brought people into the city in the mid-1800s. By the 1860s, the streetcar became a popular way of traveling within the city. At first, streetcars were powered by horses, but later changed to electric power. The streetcar also made it possible to move further away from the center of the city.
Goodale Park was one place you might want get to for some activity. You learned about Dr. Lincoln Goodale in Chapter 1. He was the first doctor in Franklinton. He later moved across the river to Columbus and established a store. In 1850, Dr. Goodale donated a large piece of land for a city park.

WORKING
Many of the jobs Columbus residents had in the mid-1800s were those you would find in towns across the country. Some jobs provided services to the community. There were bankers, insurance agents, merchants, ministers, and school teachers. Barbers, book binders, domestics, and tailors also provided services and repair. Other jobs specialized in making and selling goods. These jobs included butchers, carriage smiths, dress makers, milliners, saddlers, and stone masons.
GOING TO SCHOOL
Lucas Sullivant built the first school in Franklinton in 1806. Other schools slowly came about in the early 1800s. However, schools were hard to fund, and very few students attended school in those years. Many of these schools were in log cabins, rented rooms, or churches.
The Columbus City School District was officially established in 1845. The Board of Education selected Dr. Asa Lord as the first superintendent. He was a medical doctor and his wife was a teacher.
In1861, the first high school building opened. Called the High School of Commerce, and later, Central High School, it was located at the corner of Broad and Sixth Streets.
